Dave loves sports and exploration, and he wanted to teach students about the wonders of exploration and wilderness travel. However, it’s impossible to take so many students on trips. So hehad an idea—he would go on adventure trips to explore different places, and share his experience with students through the Internet. The result of his idea was the Wilderness Classroom. Since then,Dave and his wife Amy have been exploring different parts of the world, and teaching students about the outdoors.

One of their most famous trips was called the North American Odyssey. They wanted to use this journey to get people to protect North America’s waterways and wild places. At the same time, they wanted to teach primary and middle school students about these wild areas—their geography, history, wildlife, and so on.

The journey across North America began on April 22, 2010—Earth Day. The couple began rowing their boats north out of Seattle. They spent the next three years exploring nature across the Northwest Territories, through the Great Lakes, and down the East Coast of the United States.

Throughout the journey, about 85,000 students tracked Dave and Amy's progress. They made the Wilderness Classroom fun for these students. Every Monday during the trip, they posted an online update. They also posted videos every week. Students could help Dave and Amy make decisions about the trip—they could suggest routes the couple should take. The couple was also able to communicate with the kids at schools along the way. Over the three years of the project, they met around 25,000 students.

For Dave, who has been working as a guide for nearly 20 years, "teaching kids when they're young that these places exist is a first stepping stone for getting people outside, understanding why these places are important, and working to protect them.”

4. What is the main focus of the Wilderness Classroom?

A. Video Editing. B. Ways to plan a trip.

C. Communication skills. D. Knowledge about the outdoors.

A. Interesting and competitive. B. Demanding and accessible.

C. Traditional and boring. D. Pleasant and inspiring.

7. How can the students help the couple?

D. By finding more students to join in the study.

The Galapagos Island are full of unique plant and animal species. Unless people think carefully about how they use the island, these unique species may disappear forever.

“Take nothing but photos, leave nothing but footprints.” Great advice, but the big question remains: Just how many footprints can the Galapagos Island withstand? About 30,000 people live there, almost 200,000 tourists visit every year.

More tourism, more businesses, and increasing population are threats to the island's wildlife. The islands’ land and water are limited. Yet, most people today use them limitlessly. When the number of tourists increased, so did the number of residents and business to support them. All these people use food, water, and fuel; they produce waste and litter. This puts a great pressure on the island.

Since humans first arrived in the Galapagos Island in the 1500s, they have brought species with them from outside. Some were brought by accidents, and others, like goats, were brought on purpose. Goats ravaged the landscape, leaving very little food for the giant tortoises. Only 11 out of 15 types of giant tortoises still exist on the islands today. The goats ate up all the plants and thus also threatened rare plants.

Illegal hunting poses threats as well. Fishermen hunt illegally at night and their targets include sharks, marlins, and tuna. Sometimes seabirds get hooked as well.

There is no single conservation solution, but the Galapagos National Park Service has established park zones and visitor sites to limit human impact (影响) on the island. Only a certain number of groups are allowed in a given place at one time. The number of ships allowed to visit the island is under control, too. The human impact on the island is also carefully measured.

After it was listed a World Heritage Site in Danger, the Galapagos Islands caught the attention of the United Nations. Their conservation measures mainly focus on: prevention and control of harmful species, control of tourism, and stopping illegal fisheries. Educating people about the importance of the environment is the key. The more people who appreciate the Galapagos, the more

likely its unique treasures will be preserved.

8. What is the author's attitude towards “Take nothing but photos, leave nothing but footprints.”

A. Satisfied.B. Unconcerned.C. Doubtful.D. Unclear.

9. What does the underlined “ravaged” in paragraph 4 probably mean?

A. Destroyed. B. Hunted. C. Admired.D. Preserved.

10. Which of the following was NOT a problem faced by the Galapagos?

A. Over-use of land and water.B. Disappearance of the forest.

C. Extinction of animals and plants.D. Illegal hunting in the ocean.

11. How is the Galapagos changed after it became a World Heritage Site in Danger?

A. The number of tourists has increased sharply.

B. The island has banned both legal and illegal fisheries.

C. Human impact on the island is scientifically measured.

D. Conservation of the island is supported by the United Nations.

D

Tom didn't come across another language until he began kindergarten. In his home, conversations took place in Cherokee. Tom grew up riding horses, and travelled around the country working in a circus (马戏团)after college. Finally,he settled down in North Carolina with his wife. “She said what attracted her to me was that I was the youngest Cherokee she'd ever met who could speak Cherokee,” he says. “I bought a roundtrip ticket to visit her, but I never used the other end of the ticket.”

Yet his wife—also Cherokee—did not speak the language. He soon realised that he was a minority (少数) among his own people. At that time, just 400 or so Cherokee speakers were left in the Eastern Band. “I began to realise the problem.” Tom says.

Cherokee is far from the only minority language threatened with extinction. Over the past century alone, around 400 languages—about one every three months—have gone extinct, andmost language experts predict that 50% of the world's 6,500 languages will be gone by the end of this century.

Some people argue that language loss, like animal species loss,is simply a fact of life on the Earth. But counter arguments are abundant. “We spend huge amounts of money protecting animal species, so languages that make us human unique should be similarly nourished and protected.” says Mark from Yale University. Just as eco-systems provide a wealth of services for human beings, languages contain a system of knowledge, including geography, zoology, mathematics, astronomy, and more.

What's more, languages are products of human heritage that record unique cultures. Cherokee, for example, has no word for goodbye, only “I will see you again”. Writing is a relatively recent development in our history, and written systems currently exist for only about one-third of the world’s languages, so language itself is often the only way to pass down a community’s songs, stories and poems. “How many other traditions are out there in the world that we'll never know about because nobody recorded them before the language disappeared?” Mark adds.

12. What can be inferred from Tom's ticket to visit his wife?

A. He bought a ticket for his wife.

B. He got married and settled down.

C. The single trip ticket was sold out.

D. Horse-riding is more suitable for him.

13. What does the underlined sentence “But counter arguments are abundant” suggest?

A. Disagreement B. Agreement. C. Fact.D. Advice.

14. Which of the following statement will Mark agree with?

A. Some new languages will appear to replace the old ones.

B. A language with both written and oral systems will survive.

C. Preserving languages is as important as protecting wildlife.

D. Language loss is acceptable just as Tom's wife cannot speak Cherokee.

15. Why does the author quote Mark's words at the end of the passage?

A. To contrast the value of different languages.

B. To stress the importance of language protection.

C. To identify some history recorded by languages.

D. To question on the need of preserving languages.

CLICK FOR A FRIEND?

How would you feel if moving to a new town meant losing track of your friends? What if the only way of getting news from faraway friends was writing letters that took ages to be delivered?16 Thanks to advances in technology, how we make friends and communicate with them has

changed significantly.

Nowadays, we can move around the world and still stay in touch with the people that we want to remain friends with. Social media tools let us see what our friends are up to and maintain friendships. All you need is a wi-fi connection.

17 We may enjoy collecting model cars or playing an unusual instrument. Whatever our hobbies, the Internet can connect us with others who also enjoy doing them, even if they live on the

other side of the world.

But when you “friend”people online, does this mean that they really are your friends?18

If people always exchange true personal information online, then yes, these friendships can be real and meaningful. But we need to keep in mind that what we see on social media is often not the

whole truth about a person.

On social media sites, people tend to post only positive updates that make them appear happy and friendly. 19 Remember the saving: on the Internet, nobody knows you're a dog. A young person could be old; a woman could be a man; we could even be sharing our information with criminals.

20Although technology has changed the way we acquire friends, the meaning of friendship and our longing for friends remain the same. As Aristotle said, no one would choose to live without friends, even if he had all other goods.

A. It depends.

B. No, it never happens like this.

C. But smiling photos can hide real problems.

D. This was how things worked not very long ago.

E. The digital age also enables us to find people who share our interests.

F. But this doesn't mean that we should throw the baby out with bath water.

G. When they feel low or sad, online friendship can fill them with a cheerful glow.
