I. Teaching Objectives:

1. Knowledge revision:

(1) Words & phrases:litter, advantage, bottom, fisherman, coal, ugly, cost, wooden, plastic, takeaway, bin, shark, fin, method, cruel. Harmful, chain, ecosystem, industry, law, scientific, afford, reusable, transportation, recycle, napkin, upside, gate, bottle, president, inspiration, iron, work, metal, creativity, be harmful to, at the top(of sth.), take part in, turn off, take action, throw away, put sth. to good use, pulldown, bring back.

(2) Sentences:We’re trying to save the earth!The river used to be so clean.The air is badly polluted. No scientific studies have showed that shark fins are good for health. We should help save the sharks.

2. Culture awareness: To have students be aware of environmental crisis and learn to focus on environmental protection.

3. Learning abilities:Students can grasp some new words and expressions and use them.

4.Thinking qualities:Students are able to use present progressive, present perfect, the passive voice, modal verb and “used to”sentence pattern correctly.

I. Dictation(5 mins)

survey, standard, instruction, level, manager, in a row, look back at, make a mess, keep one’s cool, senior high, go by, believe in, first of all, be thirsty for, be thankful to sb., ahead of, along with, be responsible for, set out, separate from. (20 vocabularies and phrases)

II. Lead-in(2 mins)

1. Ask students to read the vocabularies in Unit 13 together.

2. Ask students to read the title of Unit 13, which is We’re trying to save the earth!

Question:What should we do to help save the earth in our daily life?

(Ask students to speak out as much ways as possible, if they have difficulty in doing this, they can use the phrases in 1a and 1b in Section B.)

III. Topic revision and presentation(25 mins)

1. Ask students to read the sentences in Grammar Focus and speak out the structures that we are going to review in this unit; Ask 5 students to make up 5 sentences by using the target language.

2. Ask students to readthe topic and functions in Unit 13, which are protecting the environment, talking about pollution and environmental protection.

Q1. What kinds of pollution are mentioned from 1a to 2d ?

Water pollution, land pollution, air pollution and waste pollution.

Q2. What should we do to cut down the pollution? Ask students to summarize the ways to cut down pollution, an example is given.

To cut down water pollution, we should_________________. To cut down air pollution, we are supposed to___________. To cut down land pollution, we are expected to____________. To cut down waste pollution, first, we should____________. Second, we are supposed to_____________. Most importantly, we are expected to_____________. Together, our actions can make a difference and lead to a better future.

3. Ask students to read the passage in3aand answer the following questions.

Q1. What type of writing is this? Expository writing.

Q2. What are the main ideas? Para. 1 Something about shark fin soup. Para. 2 What people do to sharks and the results. Para. 3 Call on people to save the sharks.

Q3. What do people do to sharks? People cut off their fins and throw the sharks back into the ocean. And around 70 million sharks are caught and traded in this industry every year.

Q4. What are the results?

A shark will slowly die without the fin, and the number of some kinds of sharks have fallen by over 90 percent in the last 20 to 30 years.

4. Ask students to read the passage in 2band answer the following questions.

Q1. What is the passage about?

It is about how people can think of creative ways to use things that are no longer wanted.

Q2. Who are mentioned in the passage?

Amy Hayes, Jessica Wong, and Wang Tao.

Q3. What did they do?

Amy Hayes built a house by using windows and doors of old buildings, an old boat, rocks and old glass bottles.Jessica Wong made bags by using old clothes, especially old jeans.Wang Tao made art pieces by using iron and other materials from old cars.

IV. Practice(8 mins)

1. Write from memory and check the answers immediately. (phrase in Unit 13)

2. Finish the exercises on Page 90.
